Repsol holds a 20% share in the Peru LNG project, together with Hunt Oil (50%), SK Energy (20%) and Marubeny Corporation (10%). Repsol is also the only offtaker of all LNG to be produced.
The plant is located on the coast of Peru, some 170 kilometres south of Lima, in a place called Pampa Melchorita, where work to prepare the land started in August 2005. In January 2007, the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract was awarded to Chicago Bridge & Iron Company N.V. (CB&I). The start up of the plant culminated on 20th of June, 2010 with the first LNG carrier loading.
The storage tanks have 130 000 m3 capacity and are of the "single containment" type. The plant has only one liquefaction train, which follows a mixed refrigerant process, with propane pre-cooling, C3-MR, developed by Air Products & Chemicals Inc. The loading of LNG carriers takes place at a dedicated 1.3 km long jetty. The berthing is protected by a 800 meters long breakwater, at 14 meters depth.
To provide the feed gas to the plant, a 34-inch diameter, 408-km long gas pipeline was built, crossing 22 districts in Peru. The feed gas comes from the Camisea fields, in central Peru.
